Goodbye India, you have provided so much historical and cultural teaching to last a lifetime!

And so there were two….today Faye and I did some last minute shopping and walked round Connaught Place before getting an early night in preparation for our flight in the morning. We saw some distressful sights in CP today, we saw many families living on the streets and very sick people begging. It is difficult to comprehend the contrast in societies in India. On one hand there are the beautiful and wealthy noble families living, yet living among them are so many poor, sick families and individuals. I have spent the last two summers in Mozambique, so have seen poverty in Africa and I couldnt help drawing comparisons between the two countries. Despite many Mozambicans living in similar states of poverty the Indian poverty seemed so desparate and harsh. Perhaps the poverty seemed worse as it was directly contrasted with India’s rich.

Today we visited Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi, Humayum was the Emperor Akbar the Great’s father. By now we can spot red sandstone and white marble architecture from a mile away but it was very impressive and the gardens were delightful! We tried to go to Delhi Zoo which would have been interesting however it was India’s Indepence Day so there were lots of celebrations and parades around that area.

Today the remaining few of us went shopping to Connaught Place to buy some souvenirs and gifts and boyyyy did we miss our wonderful guide Jai! Being in Delhi on our own without direction or knowledge of the area proved rather tricky with Tuk Tuk drivers trying to take us to their ‘uncles’ shop and telling me they are going marry me and give me 5 children! However we did meet a lovely, genuine local called Arun who took us around the sights and showed us where to find nice, plain pizza mmmm. The afternoon proved rather surprising. We went to an Indian massage parlour (we checked it was legitimate and recommended!) and prepared for a full body massage. However, what we didnt know was that a full body massage in India is actually a full body massage! There was not a part of my body which was left untouched! It was an interesting experience although i’m not sure I came away feeling totally relaxed but it provided many laughs anyway!

This was our last day as a tour group today asĀ we travelled back to Delhi and the lovely 3 American ladies and the Australian Pat caught their flights to other exciting parts of the world. We arrived where our Indian adventure had began with the remaining 12, had a wonderful dinner (although I have to admit I have had enough curries to last a lifetime and crave a cheese sandwhich!) then headed to a local bar.

We had a busy day today, starting with a trip to Amber Fort. Amber Fort was by far my favourite of all the architecture seen in India. Surrounded by green mountains and overlooking the beautiful town, it was an Emperor’s dream! The interior decoration was so detailed and ornate, with fountains and gardens. Our next stop was City Palace were we saw endless paintings and garments belonging to the Maharaja. It was really interesting learning about the Maharaja of Jaipur and the noble familes of Jaipur. Infact our hotel was a residence of the Bissau noble family of Jaipur. We had a very interesting evening in Jaipur, it began with a few drinks at our hotel, developed into a basement party at a neighbouring hotel and ended back at our own hotel with a pool party!

We set off on our way to Jaipur today, stopping at the Abhaneri Stepwells which was very impressive architecture, with beautiful stone carvings surrounding the step well. The most interesting part of the day was visiting the local school and having a look around the village. Meeting and interacting with the local community was really wonderful, the people were so full of energy and enthusiasm. When visiting the school we were able to watch them practice a dance dedicated to the God, Krishna. The children were beautiful! Their English was near perfect and they were intrigued by us, as we were of them. Once at Jaipur we had a walk around, taking in the sights and scenes of The Pink City. Jaipur has a slightly different atmosphere to Delhi, the locals were less friendly but the city itself (aside from the piles of waste on the side of the streets) was more calm and enjoyable than Delhi.

Today started off with a visit to Sikri, another Red Sandstone and white marble palace built by Akbar the Great. I keep on wondering how magnificent and grand these buildings would have looked in their prime. The beautiful architecture and luxurious lifestyle makes these buildings so awe inspiring. The 5m by 6m bed, perfumed floors and buildings designed simply for hide and seek were just ridiculously amazing. After this we headed to our hotel in Bhaktapur. Our hotel was sooo nice, it had grand arches, lovely gardens and a beautiful lobby! In the evening we were entertained by Indian music and dancing.
